Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash 2025 Release Description
Made in honour of American whiskey historical figure John Shenk, who in 1753 founded the distillery that was to become known as Michter’s, the Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey is made in Kentucky according to the traditional Sour Mash process to celebrate that legacy.
This 2025 expression leans heavily on rye characteristics, which are accentuated through the use of French oak barrels (toasted, not charred) from the Vosges region of France. The barrels were naturally air dried and seasoned for 24 months before being toasted, allowing a bolder, lingering spice to emerge.
Bottled at 45.6% abv, you can expect a nose of toasty burnt sugar, spice, and honey, followed by a palate of baking spice, dried fruits, toffee, nougat and burnt sugar. The finish is smooth with lingering notes of those baking spices clinging to the palate.
